August in Greece is just magical. The heat, the holidays, the sea, the food just make people relax relax and everything goes in a slower pace.
It’s not easy to describe the Greek summer, especially during August. You have to be part of it to feel it’s essence. People look and feel happy, the sun has a warming effect on their skin and soul. The mood is positive and no one seems to think about the problems and responsibilities winter will bring.
August 15 marks the death of Mary, the mother of Jesus. It’s a big celebration bigfor Christianity and ever bigger in Greece. Before that, many festivals are organised in small villages all over the country. The common feature is amazing roaster pork called “Gourounopoula” and forclor music until the next morning. I don’t care so much about the music but I always go there for the pork. It melts in your mouth!
Another thing not to miss in August is the full moon, which is absolutely breathtaking. They say that it’s the brightest moon of the year. If you are in Greece, make sure you are close to the beach to watch its reflections on the water. I was lucky this year and I had a swim with the full moon above me. Priceless!
Another ththinthat marks the Greek summer is the instant cold coffee called “Frappe”. It’s just plain Nescafe coffee with a bit of concentrated milk blended with a small mixer. Add ice cubes and cold water and… voila! Rumours say that 10 billion of Frappes are sold each summer in Greece. I am not surprised, it’s the best thing to have in a hot day. Too bad you cannot find this concept in other countries.
Until my return to the north, “Geia mas”!
